About The Summit Foundation

We’re here for good.

Our Mission

We foster philanthropy by identifying local needs and offering donors flexible ways to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors.

Our Story

In 1972, a group of committed local residents came together with a unified mission — to found an organization, supported by local givers, that would comprehensively address the future needs of Summit area residents. Those dedicated citizens laid the groundwork for a community foundation connecting donors to nonprofit organizations that form the backbone of the community.

Originally named Summit Area Public Foundation, The Summit Foundation’s stated purpose is “…to assist, encourage and promote the well-being of humankind and primarily the inhabitants of the area comprising the City of Summit and its vicinity, regardless of race, color or creed.” The Summit Foundation has stayed true to its original mission and has continued to respond to the community as its needs have evolved.

What We Do

  • We strengthen the region where we live, work, and interact each day.
  • We solicit and invest funds prudently to ensure long-term growth that supports philanthropic activities.
  • We use competitive grants and the goals of our donors to meet the needs of our community.
  • We facilitate collaboration, awareness, and solutions for donors and service providers to improve the lives of our community members.

We administer four types of funds: a general unrestricted fund, restricted-purpose funds, donor-advised funds, and scholarships. All funds support valuable and life-enhancing work of nonprofit agencies in Summit and nearby communities.
